William Henry Gates III Wiki Biography
William Henry Gates III was born on 28 October 1955, in Seattle, Washington USA, of mixed English, Scots-Irish and German ancestry. Bill Gates is famous worldwide as the co-founder and former chief executive and chairman of Microsoft, the world’s largest personal computer software company, but is also known as a very generous philanthropist.
So just how rich is Bill Gates? Sources have recently estimated that Bill has a net worth of $89 billion, making him currently the richest person in the world. His wealth has been accumulated from his career as an inventor, computer programmer, businessman and investor.
Bill Gates Net Worth $89 Billion
Bill Gates’ father, William was a prominent lawyer, and his mother, Mary worked on the board of directors at First Interstate BancSystem and the United Way. Bill was educated at Lakeside School, and in 1973 enrolled at Harvard College, but dropped-out as he recognised an opportunity to set-up a computer software company with friend Paul Allen, being firmly convinced that the computer would become a valuable tool in every office and home. They officially established Microsoft in April 1975, with Gates as the CEO, and that point was the real beginning of Gates’ accumulation of net worth. According to their vision, they began developing software for personal computers: the rest really is history.
Under the direction of Bill Gates, Microsoft formed a partnership with IBM in 1980, and launched its first retail version of Microsoft Windows in 1985. Since then both Gates and Microsoft have gone from strength to strength in the computing industry. From 1975 until 2006, Gates had primary responsibility for the company’s product strategy, obviously successfully as Microsoft’s current market capitalisation is well over $385 billion – behind only Apple and Exxon – supported by constant research, innovation and inventions in the IT industry. Of course, Bill Gates’ net worth has risen commensurately with the success of the company over more than 30 years.
Bill Gates also has several investments outside Microsoft, which have all contributed to his net worth. He founded Corbis, a digital imaging company, in 1989. In 2004 he became a director of Berkshire Hathaway, the investment company headed by long-time friend Warren Buffett. Cascade Investment, LLC is an American holding and Investment Company controlled by Bill Gates. BgC3 LLC is a company founded by Gates, too. He invested in TerraPower is a nuclear reactor design spin-off company of Intellectual Ventures. All have contributed consistently to Gates’ net worth.
In 2006, Bill Gates relinquished hands-on control of Microsoft, and in 2014 announced his resignation as Chairman of Microsoft’s Board of Directors.
Bill Gates has authored two books: ‘The Road Ahead’ co- written with Microsoft executive Nathan Myhrvold and journalist Peter Rinearson, and ‘Business @ the Speed of Thought’ co-written with Collins Hemingway. Both have made a positive impact on Bill Gates’ net worth, as have several documentaries and feature films, including ‘Triumph of the Nerds’ directed by Paul Sen, ‘Waiting for “Superman”’ directed by Davis Guggenheim, ‘The Virtual Revolution’ a British television documentary series presented by Aleks Krotoski, ‘Pirates of Silicon Valley’ directed by Martyn Burke, and ‘The Social Network’ directed by David Fincher.
In his personal life, Bill Gates married Melinda French in 1994; they have three children. Although no longer private, a consequence of Gates’ wealth saw Bill and Melinda Gates establish the charity ‘Gates Foundation’ in 2000, which is one of the biggest foundations worldwide, with the aim of reducing poverty by educating people. The foundation is controlled by Bill, his wife Melinda and trustee Warren Buffett. The ‘Foundation’ has won the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation and the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development.

1 | So we began our work in the same way anyone here would begin it. We asked: "How could the world let these children die?" The answer is simple, and harsh. The market did not reward saving the lives of these children, and governments did not subsidize it. So the children died because their mothers and their fathers had no power in the market and no voice in the system. But you and I have both. We can make market forces work better |
2 | I am an optimist. But I am an impatient optimist. The world is getting better, but it's not getting better fast enough, and it's not getting better for everyone |
3 | Humanity's greatest advances are not in its discoveries-but in how those discoveries are applied to reduce inequity. Whether through democracy, strong public education, quality health care, or broad economic opportunity-reducing inequity is the highest human achievement |
4 | if we can stretch the reach of market forces so that more people can make a profit, or at least make a living, serving people who are suffering from the worst inequities. We also can press governments around the world to spend taxpayer money in ways that better reflect the values of the people who pay the taxes. If we can find approaches that meet the needs of the poor in ways that generate profits for business and votes for politicians, we will have found a sustainable way to reduce inequity in the world |
5 | Members of the Harvard Family: Here in the Yard is one of the great collections of intellectual talent in the world. What for purpose? There is no question that the faculty, the alumni, the students, and the benefactors of Harvard have used their power to improve the lives of people here and around the world. But can we do more? Can Harvard dedicate its intellect to improving the lives of people who will never even hear its name? Let me make a request of the deans and the professors-the intellectual leaders here at Harvard: As you hire new faculty, award tenure, review curriculum, and determine degree requirements, please ask yourselves: Should our best minds be dedicated to solving our biggest problems? Should Harvard encourage its faculty to take on the world's worst inequities? Should Harvard students learn about the depth of global poverty... the prevalence of world hunger... the scarcity of clean water ...the girls kept out of school... the children who die from diseases we can cure? Should the world's most privileged people learn about the lives of the world's least privileged? |
6 | Developing a systematic way to help teachers get better is the most powerful idea in education today. The surest way to weaken it is to twist it into a capricious exercise in public shaming. Let's focus on creating a personnel system that truly helps teachers improve. |
7 | At Microsoft, we created a rigorous personnel system, but we would never have thought about using employee evaluations to embarrass people, much less publish them in a newspaper. A good personnel system encourages employees and managers to work together to set clear, achievable goals. Annual reviews are a diagnostic tool to help employees reflect on their performance, get honest feedback and create a plan for improvement. Many other businesses and public sector employers embrace this approach, and that's where the focus should be in education: school leaders and teachers working together to get better. |
8 | I am a strong proponent of measuring teachers' effectiveness, and my foundation works with many schools to help make sure that such evaluations improve the overall quality of teaching. But publicly ranking teachers by name will not help them get better at their jobs or improve student learning. On the contrary, it will make it a lot harder to implement teacher evaluation systems that work. |
9 | If you can't make it good, at least make it look good. |
10 | It's fine to celebrate success, but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure. |
11 | Just in terms of allocation of time resources, religion is not very efficient. There's a lot more I could be doing on a Sunday morning. |
12 | In terms of doing things I take a fairly scientific approach to why things happen and how they happen. I don't know if there's a god or not, but I think religious principles are quite valid. |
13 | Microsoft was founded with a vision of a computer on every desk, and in every home. We've never wavered from that vision. |
